How do I launch a Website

There are a number of distinct phases to launching a website, you must have somewhere to host your site, you must have a published address where people can find your website and you must have some content that you can edit. I'll deal with each of these below.

Site Hosting

You can get free hosting space from various sources - search in Google for "Free Hosts" and you will find plenty. The main problem with almost all free hosts is you have only limited control over the content - most will run advertisements all over your pages. If that is not for you, then consider that you may already have free space from your Internet Provider - most give space free with your subscription. Unless you fancy connecting your own server to the internet - which is possible (Phone 0871 7890318 for further advice) then you will need a web host. Again you can search for these using google or phone for advice on UK hosting companies. Webhosting is available for as little as £30 p.a.

How do I get a domain name?

If you are using freespace then you will already have a Uniform Resource Locater (URL) or address for your pages, usually at a subdomain of your host such as http://somewhere.yahoo.co.uk . None of these are easily rememberable and they may even be moved or re-named without notice. You can obtain your own domain to point at free space (this redirects queries to your page, for example http://www.wendysoft.co.uk/ is redirected to http://www.bagillt.f2s.com/ ) Or, if you are using a hosting company, you will usually purchase a domain name of your own at the same time as renting space on their server.
